How to use this online BMI calculator

Pick metric (centimetres and kilograms) or imperial (feet-inches and pounds) using the toggle, select your gender, then enter your age, height and current weight. The result updates instantly — no submit button, no sign-up, and none of your data leaves your browser. You'll see your exact BMI number, which category it falls in on the gauge, your healthy weight range, and a set of advanced metrics personalised using your age and gender.

What is a BMI calculator and why it matters

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening number that compares your weight to your height. It doesn't measure body fat directly, but it's widely used by doctors, dietitians and fitness apps as a quick first check — a fast way to see whether your weight sits in a range generally associated with lower or higher health risk, and to track how that changes over time.

How BMI is calculated

Metric:  BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
Imperial: BMI = (weight (lb) ÷ height (in)²) × 703 — this calculator applies the correct formula automatically based on the unit toggle you choose above.

Adult BMI categories

CategoryBMI range
UnderweightBelow 18.5
Normal weight18.5 – 24.9
Overweight25.0 – 29.9
Obese30.0 and above

These bands are general population guidelines from health authorities like the WHO — individual factors such as muscle mass, age, and ethnicity can shift what's healthy for a given person.

About the advanced metrics

BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is calculated using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which factors in your weight, height, age and gender to estimate how many calories your body burns at complete rest. Daily calorie need multiplies BMR by an activity factor you select, to estimate total calories needed to maintain your current weight. Ideal body weight uses the Devine formula, a gender-specific reference commonly used in clinical settings. Estimated body fat % uses the Deurenberg formula, which derives a rough body fat estimate from BMI, age and gender — it is an estimate, not a substitute for measured body composition (e.g. DEXA or skinfold testing).

Why gender matters for these calculations

Plain BMI doesn't use gender at all — it's just weight over height squared. But men and women typically differ in average lean muscle mass and body fat distribution at the same BMI, so the more advanced formulas above (BMR, ideal weight, body fat %) apply different constants for men and women to give a more personalised estimate.

Tips for using a BMI calculator accurately

  • Weigh yourself in the morning, before eating, in light clothing, on a flat hard surface.
  • Measure height without shoes, standing straight with your back against a wall.
  • Stick to one unit system per reading — don't mix cm with lb.
  • Track BMI over weeks or months rather than reacting to a single day's number, since normal fluctuation is expected.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

BMI is a useful starting point, but it has known limits. It doesn't separate muscle from fat, so very muscular people and athletes can show a higher BMI despite low body fat. It's also less reliable for pregnant women, growing children and teenagers, and older adults who've lost muscle mass. For a complete picture of health, BMI is best used alongside other measures — like waist circumference — and a doctor's assessment, not as a standalone diagnosis.
