How car loan EMI is calculated
Your car loan EMI is the fixed monthly amount you pay until the loan is cleared. Each EMI is a mix of principal (the amount you borrowed) and interest — early payments are interest-heavy, and the mix shifts toward principal as the loan matures. Indian lenders use the reducing-balance method, which this calculator follows exactly:
New car vs used car loans in India
Lenders treat new and used cars differently:
- New car loans — usually 7.5–10% p.a., financing up to 90% of the on-road price, tenure up to 7 years.
- Used car loans — typically 10–14% p.a. since resale value is harder to predict, financing 70–85% of the assessed value, tenure usually capped at 5 years.
Enter your car's on-road price minus down payment as the loan amount above, and adjust the rate to match new or used financing.
What affects your car loan EMI
Down payment
Most banks finance 80–90% of the on-road price, so a larger down payment directly cuts your loan amount, your EMI, and your total interest.
Your credit score
A CIBIL score above 750 typically qualifies for a lender's best advertised rate. Lower scores usually mean a higher rate or a smaller sanctioned amount.
Tenure length
A longer tenure lowers your monthly EMI but increases total interest paid — the repayment schedule above shows that trade-off year by year.
Processing fees and other charges
Most lenders charge a one-time processing fee of 0.5–2% of the loan amount, plus possible loan insurance and foreclosure charges. These sit outside the EMI and should be budgeted separately.
Tips to reduce your car loan EMI
- Put down as large a down payment as comfortably possible — it has the biggest single impact on your EMI.
- Compare rates across at least 3 lenders; dealership in-house financing isn't always the cheapest option.
- Choose a tenure that keeps your EMI affordable without stretching so long that total interest outweighs the savings.
- Watch for festive-season or year-end interest rate offers from banks and NBFCs.
